How to Choose the Right Plus Size Kurta Set: Size, Cut & Fabric Guide

Do not go by the size you usually buy — sizes differ from brand to brand. Take a measuring tape and note these three numbers in inches:

• Bust: around the fullest part of your chest, over the bra you usually wear.
• Waist: around your natural waistline, tape neither tight nor loose.
• Hip: around the fullest part of your hips.

Between two sizes? Always take the larger one. A kurta that is slightly roomy can be adjusted by any tailor in ten minutes. A kurta that is tight across the bust cannot be let out.

Step 3: Choose the right cut for your body

Anarkali — the easiest fit for a fuller figure

An Anarkali is fitted through the bust and flares out below it. That means you only need the bust to fit — the waist and hips have plenty of room. If your hip measurement is much bigger than your bust, or you simply want comfort through a long function, an Anarkali is the safest choice.

Straight kurta — clean and easy for daily wear

A straight-cut kurta falls from the shoulder in one line. It works well if your bust and hip measurements are close to each other. Look for a kurta length of 44–46 inches — it falls below the knee and gives a longer, balanced look. Pair it with a straight pant rather than a tight legging.

Unstitched suit — when you want an exact fit

If you are above 3XL, or your measurements do not match any one size (for example a larger bust with a smaller waist), an unstitched suit is the best option. Step 4: Pick a fabric that works in Indian weather

• Cotton: the best choice for daily wear and summer. It breathes, does not cling and is easy to wash at home.
• Silk blend / Roman silk: holds its shape and drapes well, so it looks neat through a long wedding or puja. Usually dry clean or gentle hand wash.
• Georgette: light and flowing, good for parties. Choose a set with lining if you want it less sheer.

Small styling tips that make a big difference

• Length matters more than colour. A kurta that ends below the knee looks more graceful than one that stops at the hip.
• Drape the dupatta long. Letting it fall straight down from one shoulder creates a long vertical line.
• Wear what you love. Bright colours and big prints are not "only for slim women". If you like yellow, wear yellow.
• Check the sleeve and armhole. A well-made larger size has a wider armhole too, not just a wider body.
