A good cotton kurta set can last for years — or fade and shrink in a few washes. The difference is almost always in how it is washed. Here is a simple routine to keep your cotton kurta sets looking new.
Before the first wash

Wash it separately the first time, in cold water. Printed and dyed cotton can release some colour in the first wash.

Add a spoon of salt to the water for the first soak if you want — many families use this to help set the colour.

Read the product care note. Embroidered and silk-blend pieces often need dry cleaning or gentle hand wash instead.
Washing routine

Turn it inside out. This protects prints and thread work from rubbing.

Use cold or normal water, never hot. Hot water shrinks cotton and fades colour.

Use a mild detergent — liquid detergent is gentler than strong powder. Never pour detergent directly on the fabric.

Hand wash or gentle machine cycle. Do not scrub embroidered areas with a brush.

Do not soak for long. 10–15 minutes is enough; overnight soaking causes colour bleeding.

No bleach, even on white or cream sets.
Drying

Dry in shade, inside out. Strong sun fades bright colours like yellow, pink and red very quickly.

Do not wring hard. Gently squeeze out water and shake the kurta flat before hanging.
- Hang the dupatta straight so it doesn't crease in one spot.
Ironing
- Iron on medium heat while the fabric is very slightly damp — creases come out easily.
- Iron embroidered or printed areas from the reverse side, or place a thin cotton cloth on top.
- Chiffon and georgette dupattas need low heat.
Storing
- Store fully dry, folded, away from direct sunlight.
- Keep dark and light colours separate for the first few months.
- For zari or silk-blend festive sets, wrap in a cotton cloth instead of plastic.
